A guide to chopping avocado with no fuss and no mess. Just simple cut chunks of avocado that won't look out of place in a pretty salad.
How to cut avocado
There are many fancy ways that you can chop and peel and slice up an avocado. However, most of the time I just want mine out of the skin, stone removed, cubed and on my plate. No fuss and no mess. So this is my method for how to cut avocado and getting it sorted in double quick time (plus see the video guide at the bottom of this post!).
- Carefully position your knife length ways along the avocado. Then cut down the middle into the avocado until the knife reaches the stone. Move the knife around the stone so scoring all around the fruit.
- Remove the knife and twist the avocado so one side comes away from the stone
- Use the knife blade to tap gently into the stone. Then twist and remove.
- Score the flesh into cubes with a knife, whilst still in the skin and scoop out with a spoon
- squeeze over lime juice to keep fresh and stop from going brown.
Can you keep half an avocado in the fridge?
Yes is the simple answer to this. If you are saving half of the avocado, save the half with the stone in and keep the skin on. If you can, rub some lime juice on the cut flesh before wrapping tightly in cling film. Then pop in the fridge and use within the next 1 to 2 days.
Avocado benefits
Avocado is a creamy fruit, full of good fats (monounsaturated), soluble fibre and plenty of nutritious micronutrients. Its often highlighted as as a food with health benefits, although the high fat content means that the calories can soon add up. Half an avocado usually provides 1 of 5 a day, around 19g of fat (12g being healthy monounsaturated fat) and 190kcal. A fantastic way to bulk up a salad and protect against heart disease.
